The Viagra patent covers the brand name's ability to treat impotence in both men and women, according to the company.
The FDA has approved Viagra for more than a half-dozen medications, including the erectile dysfunction drug's extended-release form for Cialis, the popular prescription drug for erectile dysfunction, and its generic version, Levitra.
The drugmaker said it has "decided not to grant more exclusivity for this product than possible" for its ongoing studies on its drug, which are under way in India to examine its safety and effectiveness in the country.
"This approval means that other generic versions of the drug are not approved for this indication and there will be additional studies to determine whether these are safe and effective," said Les Funtleyder, Pfizer's U. head of innovation, in a statement.
